Classes

Thank you to Dawn Shelstad for stepping up to coordinate our classes.  She is busily working on details for several classes that have been requested.  If you have an idea for a class, please email Dawn.

Advertising

Some of our members have expressed an interest in advertising their businesses through the network.  After much discussion, the board has agreed to allow members only limited advertising options on the website or as a newsletter sponsor.

This will help offset network operating costs as well as provide a service to network members.

PPN continues to protect the privacy of our members.  Please see our privacy policy at the bottom of this newsletter.

If you are interested in advertising, please email Kathryn.

June, 2006

A big THANK YOU to each of you who volunteered on the Walton Feed delivery day.  We couldn't have done it without you!  Thank you for giving up your Saturday to make our Walton Feed order possible.  It was a lot of work and a lot of fun.  You really are the "A Team"!  Click here for a brief look at the day.

Six Grain Cereal Mix - We have five 50# bags that were shipped in error.  This is a wonderful mix of red wheat, rye, oats, barley, sunflower seeds, and white wheat.  You can cook it up like oatmeal in 5-8 minutes or grind it to make a really nice bread flour.  As Richard Blackburn, our resident bread guru showed us at his famous whole grain bread class, you can also roll your loaves in this mix before baking for a fabulous, rustic appeal.

These are available for PPN members to purchase for $20.43 including freight.  Contact Warren Fitch at 278-2647 to arrange pickup from his home in Briargate.

Thank You!

Thanks to the wonderful PPN volunteers for making this year's Walton Feed delivery a great success. We were also blessed with good weather and a great delivery location. Take a second to view the video from delivery day. It looks like pre-filling orders is the way of the future; we only had one product misplaced. For those of you who didn't receive the bags of brown rice, our apologies. For whatever reason, Walton didn't put those bags on the truck. Again, thanks for your help. PPN members are the best!

Looking ahead, PPN hopes to provide more ordering opportunities next year with a two-truck order in the spring. To do so, we must find an indoor location, approximately 8,000 to 10,000 square feet which can be utilized Friday afternoon through Saturday evening on a weekend in late spring. The two-truck order will also be contingent upon a large enough order to cover expenses and enough volunteers to fill three shifts (Friday evening, Saturday morning, Saturday afternoon). This is where each of you can help. We will need to find the location before we move forward with the ordering process next February. If any of you know someone who owns a large facility or if you know of a large public building we can rent, please contact me or Kathryn through the website. Until next spring, watch for other PPN ordering opportunities.

Tip of the Month

Emergency Supplies - FEMA recommends everyone take personal responsibility for emergency preparedness.  We should each have a 72 hour "grab & go" kit stored at home, work, and in our vehicles.  Additionally, we should be prepared to be on our own for a minimum of two weeks.

Water Storage - The first priority in preparedness.  Plan on storing a minimum of one gallon per person per day for use in drinking, cooking, and personal hygiene.

Walton Feed has a helpful article on techniques for water storage.  Click here to view.

The EPA has helpful information about emergency water disinfection.  Click here to view.

Recipe of the Month

Colorful Bean Bake - Courtesy of Bob's Red Mill, http://www.bobsredmill.com/

Zucchini is one of the main ingredients in this casserole. Great to make during harvest season.

Ingredients:

2 cups cooked kidney beans

1-1/2 cups whole kernel corn (can be fresh)

1-1/2 cups shredded Monterey Jack cheese

1 cup tomato sauce

1/2 cup chopped green chilies, drained

1-2 dashes Tabasco sauce

2 cups coarsely shredded zucchini

1/4 cup cornmeal, medium grind

1/4 cups white bean flour

1 cup water

1 egg, beaten

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

In a 9" x 13" baking dish, combine beans, corn, tomato sauce, chilies, Tabasco sauce and
1/2 of cheese; mix well. Top with zucchini.

Combine cornmeal, bean flour, egg and enough water to make a pourable batter. Pour over top of casserole. Bake for 20-25 minutes; top with remaining cheese and bake an additional 2-3 minutes, until cheese has melted and is bubbly.

Yield: 4-6 servings

Member Poll

PPN members - we need your input! Do you have a WISH LIST of items you would like to try that ProvidentPeople.Net might be able to make available?  We are compiling a list of items our members might order if they were available.  We ask that you to take a few moments to research products you might be interested in (WaltonFeed.com, Bulkfoods.com , Herbco.com, etc.) and reply to mailto:info@providentpeople.net?subject=My Wish List with your Wish List.  This is an opportunity to speak up and help establish our ordering opportunities!

For instance, because Walton's database is so extensive, we cannot offer ALL of their items for our group order. We must narrow it down to a manageable number of items and this is an opportunity for you to let us know what items you would like to see offered for next year's Walton Feed order. The best time to start your "shopping list" for next year is right after Walton delivery day! Update it throughout the year and by the time orders are due, you are ready!! Keep it right with your inventory sheet and it will be convenient to update it as needed.

Here are the details:
Do your research and compile YOUR wish list.
Submit the items and contact info to:
info@providentpeople.net

On another note, within the forum of our Yahoo group is the perfect opportunity to "introduce" others to the item you want to see as a popular choice. "Sell" your idea to others by indicating how it can be used, the benefits of this item (recipes are always good), and why you want to see it offered. It is easy to join!

NOTE: Suggestions will be a valuable tool in determining what PPN offers for future orders. We want to offer what our members want and need and what we have volunteers to support.  We want you to know that WE ARE LISTENING!

Financial Corner

How can I keep my family in its home if my spouse or I die?

That’s an important question, especially since most families depend on one or both pay checks to make the mortgage payment today.

Life insurance can help assure your family remains in its home if you or your spouse die.

Permanent life insurance, in an amount equal to or greater than the mortgage, can provide funds needed to pay off the mortgage if you die prematurely. As your mortgage balance decreases, the proceeds from your permanent life insurance contract can be used to help pay off the mortgage, cover final expenses or provide an income for your surviving spouse and family.
