Advertising

Some of our members have expressed an interest in advertising their businesses through the network.  After much discussion, the board has agreed to allow members only limited advertising options on the website or as a newsletter sponsor.

This will help offset network operating costs as well as provide a service to network members.

PPN continues to protect the privacy of our members.  Please see our privacy policy at the bottom of this newsletter.

If you are interested in advertising, please email Kathryn.

Tip of the Month

Emergency Supplies - FEMA recommends everyone take personal responsibility for emergency preparedness.  We should each have a 72 hour "grab & go" kit stored at home, work, and in our vehicles.  Additionally, we should be prepared to be on our own for a minimum of two weeks.

Fixing Food - OK, you either have or are working on building up those emergency food supplies.  Do you have what it would take to prepare meals using them?  A few basics would include things like a manual can opener, canned heat or a camp stove.  In the event of evacuation, you might need things like mess kits or plastic cups plastic utensils and paper plates.

FEMA has a wonderful disaster preparedness guide titled Are You Ready?  It is available in hard copy as well as on the web for download.  For more information, click here.

Recipe of the Month

Thanks to Dawn Shelstad for contributing this month's recipe.

For a delightfully pink sparkling clear jelly, try this recipe for Rhubarb Jelly! The secret to this fabulously clear and sparkling product is extracting the juice using a steam juicer.

Rhubarb Jelly

3 ½ Cups rhubarb juice
1 Pkg. powdered pectin
4 cups sugar

Wash rhubarb and cut into chunks. Place in steam juicer to extract juice-following manufacturer’s directions.

Measure juice into a 6-8 qt. sauce pot. Gradually stir in powdered pectin and bring mixture to a full rolling boil over high heat, stirring constantly.

Add sugar, stirring to dissolve and return mixture to a full, rolling boil. Boil hard for 1 minute stirring constantly. Remove from heat and skim foam if necessary.

Fill prepared jars to ¼” headspace. Wipe rim with a clean, damp cloth and adjust 2-piece lids to fingertip tight. Place in canner and process for 15 minutes (written for high altitude).

Makes 6 half pint jars.

Financial Corner

About to receive a pension distribution from your employer? What should you do?

Caution: How you handle your pension distribution may impact the pension funds you’ll rely on for the next 20 to 30 years of retirement.

First, you’ll want to place your lump-sum distribution in the financial vehicle best suited to meet your retirement goal. Secondly, you’ll want to minimize the amount of federal and state taxes and Internal Revenue Service penalties you will pay.

You could receive the lump-sum distribution in a check, but your employer will withhold 20 percent from the total to apply toward federal taxes. And if you’re not yet age 59 ½, you may incur an additional 10 percent premature distribution penalty.

You could roll the funds into a certificate of deposit, but that’s a temporary solution. When the CD comes due, you’ll once again have to decide what to do with the funds.

A better option may be to roll the funds into an IRA.  The funds you place in an IRA grow on a tax-deferred basis under current tax laws and are not taxed until the money is received, often when your income is lower and taxed at a lower rate. Additionally, IRAs have flexible funding guidelines, so you can choose from annuities, mutual funds and other investment products.
